MAX phases are conducting, nanolamellar materials. We recently synthesized single crystals of the V2AlC phase of macroscopic size.

On the left, the picture shows the two parts of crystal after cleavage with a strong adhesive tape in a way quite similar to what is achieved for obtaining graphene from graphite.
On the right, image is an AFM topograph of the cleaved surface in a region with a high density of tears.
