Abstract

Over the last few decades, the scientific community has devoted great efforts towards the development of technologies that make our lives easier. The advances achieved so far have allowed the fabrication of devices and systems suitable for a wide range of applications, e.g. energy generation and storage, sensors, lighting devices, computers, which are currently essential tools in our society. Because of their unique opto-electronic properties, semiconductors are governing the innovation and development of these technologies; hence, the search of new materials with specific and tailored properties is indeed a cornerstone for a successful technological progress. Additionally, the increasing demand of energy and the environmental concern have awakened the interest for innovative semiconductor materials convenient for the preparation of energy-efficient, cost-effective and environmental friendly devices.
