New multicaloric materials

Dr. Guillaume F. Nataf

Abstract

Current cooling technologies are based on the expansion and compression of fluids that are harmful to the environment, and display relatively low energy efficiencies, therefore providing strong imperatives for change. By contrast, cooling based on thermal changes that are produced in ferroic materials near first-order phase transitions when subjected to changes in magnetic, electric or stress applied field promise noiseless, compact and environmentally friendly coolers. Here, I will present potential multicaloric materials that have not been investigated before, i.e. caloric materials that can develop thermal changes in response to more than one species of driving field.
