Strongly Correlated Materials-v0

OBJECTIVES
  • Study of oxide or nitride based materials with functional
properties related to strong electronic interactions.
  • Synthesis of thin films, heterostructures, multilayers and supperlattices
  • Correlation of physical properties with microstructure, surface and interface properties, stress and strain.
Current breakthroughs in smart functional materials are based on correlations induced by strong electronic interactions leading to remarkable physical properties. New functionalities can be amplified and tuned by external parameters (stress, strain at interfaces or surfaces) particularly when these materials are prepared as multilayers or superlattices.

Nanodots in functional oxide multilayers

Systems under study

After several studies on oxide materials for electronic applications (high k, MIM), recent studies were devoted to perovskite ferroelectric and multiferroic oxides. Examples :
  • RE nickelates and the tuning of the metal-insulator transition by strain and stress (Thesis : C. Girardot & I. Iliescu).
  • The structural transformation from the monclinic mL-Ta2O5 in a trigonal phase (Na,K)2Ta4O11 resulting in “giant” piezoelectric coefficient d33 (>1000 pm/V). (Thesis: M. Le Gallic)
Another strength of the group is based on the development of superconducting heterostructures and multilayers : high Tc materials (YBCO/LZO/Ni) for current transport applications and low Tc materials multilayers (NbN/AlN/NbN) for RF cavity applications. The aim in both cases is to enhance physical properties either by optimizing the interfaces or by strengthening intrinsic physical properties in a multilayers configuration. (EUCARD2 Project).
