Surface and Interface Properties of Transparent Conducting Oxides

Abstract

Transparent conducting oxides (TCO) are widely used as electrodes in thin film solar cells and flat panel displays. For these applications, surface and interface properties are of particular importance. Among the important surface and interface properties are the work function and the energy band alignment.

After an introduction into the physical and chemical background of the various phenomena related to the surfaces and interfaces of semiconducting oxides, it will be demonstrated how these properties can be derived using X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS, UPS). The presented results cover systematic studies of n-type TCOs, namely ZnO, SnO2 and In2O3, which have been obtained from a large number of polycrystalline and partially epitaxial thin films prepared by magnetron sputtering. Besides work functions and interface properties, surface band bending, oxygen exchange behaviour and the importance of in-situ sample preparation will be addressed.
